Rising Star: Tanae Lavon of RoyalT Kouture

RoyalT for the Real Women

I had the pleasure of meeting Tanae about 6 or 7 years ago at an event we were both showcasing mini collections at. We connected on a fashion level and have been friends since. We have worked together on several projects and I have watched her fashion empire grow and soar. One thing that I love about fashion in San Antonio or the world for that matter is that there is a place for everyone. I love her unique approach to fashion, makeup and hair. Tanae’s mother Toni Campbell is a celebrity hairstylist and teacher with a huge following. They both joined forces to create House of RoyalT.

1. Where did your creative spark in fashion photography begin-can you trace the path/timeline that got you to where you are today?

I’ve always had my own type of style even as a kid. So it only seemed right to get into fashion, I would sketch out designs and redesign my own clothes. I couldn’t sew yet so I would use a hot glue gun to make some designs. High school is where I learned to use a sewing machine, and then my grandfather bought my first machine. Once I learned the basics, I took off from there and taught myself new tricks. Being able to look at something and figure out exactly how it was accomplished, and my creativity is what got to where I am now.

2. What inspires your creativity?

My creativity is inspired by women finding their confidence. I take pride in making women feel and look good. I love getting on YouTube and sitting and watching fashion shows all day, I can her inspiration from anything and anyone. Even just walking down the street my mind is constantly thinking about fashion, bad what I can create new.

3. Where do you live & how does it influence you?

Being born raised in San Antonio definitely has some influence, when it comes to doing what I do. I felt like the city needed a facelift when it came to fashion. I just wanted to bring a new look and something different to the fashion community.

4. How have you grown your business from an idea to where it is now?

Once I started sewing and being serious about it, the orders started pouring in. I knew then I had something good that the people liked, and my mom noticed as well. So she allowed me to set up a clothing rack in her salon with some of my designs. From then business started to grow, and my mom suggested opening a boutique. With the help of my mom, we found a location and in 2010 we opened RoyalT Kouture Boutique. We recently did some upgrading, and now we are not only just a women’s clothing boutique but we also offer hair, makeup, and massage services. Changed the name to House of RoyalT Salon Beauty Bar and Boutique; it’s the ultimate one stop shop for women to come be pampered and treated like Royalty.

5. What do you create with & why?

I create with my Mind Body and Soul because that's how Passionate I am about my craft that I put my All into it

6. Do you keep a journal or mood board? Can you show me your workspace or a part of your process?

I do keep a journal, and I’ve been wanting to start doing a mood board, so that I can stop trying to store everything in my brain 😏 My work space is organized chaos lol, but it works for me, over 4 machines including my original one my grandfather bought when I was 16.

7. What did you overcome to be here now?

I had to overcome being that shy passive girl, who was scared to share her feelings, and talk to people. It was one of the hardest things for me, cause I was scared to talk and meet with new. But being in this business you have to has this awesome personality and be a people person, which I had to learn really quick.

8. What have you learned so far about business/creativity that you can share with others?

It’s hard work being an entrepreneur, but very rewarding. You have to be patient in this business, because it can become overwhelming. Stay positive and always hang around or keep like minded people in your corner, it’s very important. Always remember your goals, and do whatever it takes to reach them. Believe in yourself don’t expect others to.

9. Where are you headed?

My plan is to open up more boutiques that not only cater to women but men and children as well.

10. How can people connect with you?

I’m at my boutique everyday during our store hours.
